Compensation, bonus fees for players of Handball

Basle – Switzerland, Feb 26, 2013: As already announced in November 2012, the International Handball Federation pays and distributes compensation and bonus fees for all players who participated at the 2013 Men’s World Championship in Spain, following a similar system the IHF had already used for the 2011 Men’s World Championship in Sweden. The compensation and bonus fee considers all days of the competition and not only match days, and depends on the final ranking of the national teams. Compared to 2011, the compensation fee was increased by 33 percent for the 2013 event, as players of the four top ranked teams now receive 400 Swiss Franks (CHF) per day, 100 CHF more than two years ago.

The amount of compensation fees has been determined as follows:

• CHF 400.- per player and day of teams ranked 1st – 4th (Spain, Denmark, Croatia, Slovenia)

• CHF 300.- per player and day of teams ranked 5th – 8th (Germany, France, Russia, Hungary)

• CHF 200.- per player and day of teams ranked 9th – 16th (Poland, Serbia, Tunisia, Iceland, Brazil, FYR Macedonia, Belarus, Egypt)

• CHF 100.- per player and day of teams ranked 17th – 20th (Algeria, Argentina, Saudi-Arabia, Qatar)

• CHF 75.- per player and day of teams ranked 21st – 24th (Korea, Montenegro, Chile, Australia)

Additionally, a bonus fee is paid to all participating teams based on their final ranking, which was divided by the number of players.

• CHF 30.000.- for teams ranked 1st – 4th (Spain, Denmark, Croatia, Slovenia)

• CHF 20.000.- for teams ranked 5th – 8th (Germany, France, Russia, Hungary)

• CHF 12.000.- for teams ranked 9th – 16th (Poland, Serbia, Tunisia, Iceland, Brazil, FYR Macedonia, Belarus, Egypt)

• CHF 4000.- for teams ranked 17th – 24th (Algeria, Argentina, Saudi-Arabia, Qatar, Korea, Montenegro, Chile, Australia)

These additional fees belong to the clubs, which also benefit from the insurance the IHF effected for all players participating at the World Championship and where the partner insurance company bears the loss of salary after injuries. Additionally, and for the first time, all travel costs (flight tickets) of the 24 participating teams were borne by the IHF.

According to the decision of the 2011 IHF Congress in Marrakech, clubs are no direct stakeholders of the International Handball Federation. Therefore the transfer of the compensation and bonus fee is handled via the National Federations.

Now – after the detailed calculation of all players involved in the World Championship – the IHF will transfer the money to the National Federations, which are then obliged to forward it to the clubs, not only for the players of their national team, but also for foreign players, contracted to clubs of the respective country. For example there is a total of 56 players listed who play for German clubs – and the overall compensation and bonus fee of 243.831,22 CHF for the German clubs concerned will be transferred by the IHF to the German Handball Federation to distribute it to the respective clubs.

The IHF has informed all National Federations involved that they need to get in contact with the relevant clubs to forward a confirmation that the clubs agree to this method of payment. This confirmation then needs to be returned to the IHF. Upon receipt of the confirmation, the compensation and bonus fees will be distributed via the National Federations to the clubs.

The overall sum the IHF spends for compensation and bonus fee, prize money, qualification bonus, host fee, player’s insurance and for the first travel costs of the 2013 Men’s World Championship in Spain amounts to 4,063.985,88 Swiss Franks. —- IHF
