PRESIDENT OPENED THE NEW FIG WEBSITE!

Lausanne, Feb 23, 2012: NEW FIG WEBSITE!, At the opening of the Executive Committee meeting, FIG President Bruno Grandi (ITA) officially opened the new Internet website of the Federation, marking the advent of the 4th generation of this medium, which was inaugurated for the first time on May 5, 1999.

This new portal is an invitation to the institutional visitors of the FIG to access to the numerous sources of information available, in a new designed environment and organization, for the greater convenience of the users.

The purpose of the FIG website is primarily directed towards the expectations of an institutional public including FIG Authorities, member federations, social and economic players and the press. The portal provides easy access to social networks, allowing the visitors of the Federation’s site to join the thousands of gymnastics fans who attend daily.

Historical background

The first version of the official FIG website was born on May 5, 1999 and sealed a partnership with Worldsport, whose server was abruptly and permanently withdrawn from service during the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000. A new address was then created with the assistance of the Canadian Mercator, a partner that FIG abandoned shortly before its disappearance from the market in 2003. The site was then hosted by Excel Informatique in Romanel (SUI) until 2008, when the data were transferred to FIG servers SportCentric in London, with which FIG cooperates today.

About the FIG: The International Gymnastics Federation is the governing body for gymnastics worldwide. It is the oldest established international sports federation and has participated in the Olympic Games since their revival in 1896. The FIG governs seven disciplines: Gymnastics for All, Men’s Artistic, Women’s Artistic, Rhythmic, Trampoline, Aerobic and Acrobatic. It counts 130 national affiliated federations and boasts a 25-person staff at its international seat in Lausanne (SUI), host city of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
