Intersport European Championships 8th-16th October 2011

ITTF Press Release: For a fifth time in a row Germany clinched the title in the Men’s Teams Event at the INTERSPORT European Championships in Gdansk/Sopot (Poland). Netherlands also repeated last year’s success and clinched their fourth consecutive women’s title. Germany had never won a final against Sweden and it was up to new generation to prove that they were capable of rewriting the history books.This they did and in Gdansk /Sopot 2011 there was no repeat of Bern 1980, Gotheburg 1990, Bremen 2000 or Zagreb 2002.

This generation proved too strong for each adversary in Europe, defeating Sweden at the last hurdle to clinch their fifth title. Timo BOLL proved once again that he is top of the current generation of European elite with a 3:1 victory over Jorgen PERSSON. Dimitrij OVTCHAROV beat Par GERELL, whilst Patrick BAUM accounted at Jens LUNDQVIST.

In the semi-final Germany overcame Portugal, with the other bronze going to Austria. In the Women’s event, champions from Ostrava, Stuttgart and St Petersburg won their fourth consecutive gold. In the re-run of the last years final the Netherlands overcame Romania. They needed just three matches in the final to reach another title. LI Jiao gave a dream start to the team in her match against Daniela DODEAN.

LI Jie was stretched the full distance in her match against Elizabeta SAMARA, but prevailed in the end. The experienced 42 year-old Elena TIMINA was up against 16 year-old Bernadette SZOCS in third match. The brave Romanian had the heavy burden of 0:2 on her shoulders to deal with when she started the duel. She fought hard and went the full distance, even had a match ball, before TIMINA succeeded. In the penultimate stage Netherlands beat Hungary and Romania overcame Belarus.
