LAUSANNE (SUI), FIG Office, May 30, 2012: FIG Acrobatic Gymnastics, Following the 23rd World Championships at Lake Buena Vista (USA) in April, the international Acrobatic Gymnastics elite meet again for the second World Cup of the season in Aalen (GER). The German Gymnastics Federation (DTB), together with the organisers of the Württembergischer Sportakrobatik Verband, will welcome some 65 gymnasts from seven different countries to the Greuthalle Aalen, east of Stuttgart.

Competitions will be held in Women’s and Mixed Pairs, as well as Women’s and Men’s Groups, with Qualifications taking place on May 31 and June 1 and the Finals scheduled for Saturday, June 2.

Belgium’s strong delegation includes the new World Champions in Mixed Pairs, Laure de Pryck and Nicolas Vleeshouwers, and the runners-up from Lake Buena Vista in Women’s Group, Camille van Betsbrugge, Lara Schollier and Sanne van Overberghe. While the latter will face tough competition from the World Bronze medalists, Yuliya Khrypach, Julia Kovalenko and Hanna Kobyzeva of Belarus, a nip and tuck contest is expected in Mixed Pairs with Russia’s World Silver medalists, Tatiana Okulova and Revaz Gurgenidze. The challengers were only outscored by a narrow margin in the World Final six weeks ago and will be eager to make amends.

In Women’s Pairs Russia can call on more Lake Buena Vista finalists in Valentina Kim and Elizaveta Dubrovina, who have good chances of a medal this time around.

Hosts Germany have entered two Mixed Pairs and three Women’s Groups, with Nikolai Rein and Kornelia Laichinger as well as locals Sandra Stoll, Sabrina Hegele and Marina Graessle having all competed at Lake Buena Vista.

About 2012 FIG Acrobatic Gymnastics World Cup Series

The FIG Acrobatic Gymnastics World Cup circuit includes three category B events, all of which feature Qualifications and Finals in Men’s and Women’s Pairs, Mixed Pairs as well as Men’s and Women’s Groups.

With stopovers in Europe only, World Cup competitions are slated for March 3 – 4 in Maia (POR), May 31 – June 2 in Aalen (GER) and September 8 -9 in Veliky Novgorod (RUS).

One balance and one dynamic exercise are presented during Qualifications, while the Finals feature one combined exercise. Participation is limited to three units per country in Qualifications, and the top eight pairs or groups per category with a maximum of two units per country qualify for the Finals. In a scenario with less than nine participants, only six will proceed to the Final. In the event of failure to qualify for a Final, a wild card will ensure that the host federation participates in a single category of its choice.

The world ranking points collected by competitors during the circuit will tally up, and the top scorers in each discipline will be crowned the winner of the overall series at the ultimate event in Veliky Novgorod. Image © FIG
