3×3 EuroTour Set To Heat Up Summer

Munich – Germany, April 18, 2013: The inaugural 3×3 EuroTour is set to heat up the 2013 summer with nine stopovers across Europe before rocking up in Budapest for the Final. Sticking with a “basketball for everybody” approach, over 100 teams will take to the court in each of the nine destinations, playing across an unlimited number of categories.

One senior men’s team from each stop will win a trip to play in the winner-takes-all 5,000 Euro grand finale in Budapest, on the final weekend of September.

FIBA Europe has already had a presence in the 3×3 arena in the previous two summers with a number of stand-alone events, but 2013 marks the first year in which the tour takes on an official tone, hence the inclusion of the final tournament.

“3×3 basketball is rapidly transforming into a competitive organised sport with potential Olympic inclusion a driving force behind this,” says FIBA Europe Secretary General Kamil Novak, adding, “That is why it is important that as the governing body of basketball in Europe, we lend our full support to 3×3.”

As in summers past, the tournaments are scheduled to be held in a down-town location in each of the 10 cities, with the distinctive blue FIBA Europe courts being transported into each city.

As usual, the basketball itself will only make up a part of the entertainment with the obligatory slam-dunk and skills competitions once more featuring; as well as entertainment organised by each of the local organising committees (LOC).

The nine cities prior to Budapest will be announced within the coming weeks.

Teams competing in the 3×3 EuroTour will also have the chance to qualify for the Lausanne and Prague stops on the FIBA 3×3 World Tour – FIBA’s flagship 3×3 tour.

Other stops on the second edition of the FIBA 3×3 World Tour are Tokyo, Japan; San Juan, Puerto Rico; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; and the World Tour Final in Istanbul.

“The first edition of the FIBA 3×3 World Tour proved a resounding success and one of the highlights of the 2012 season,” said FIBA Secretary General Patrick Baumann, adding, “in 2013, we will continue to witness the growth of the discipline as we embrace new tournaments, countries and regions.” —- FIBA Europe
