Young girl to represent Pakistan at Torch Relay

By Rashid Ali Siddiqui, (SJAS): Karachi – Pakistan, June 24, 2012 – Zainab Imran, a young girl from Karachi will represent Pakistan at the London Olympics 2012 Torch Relay to be held on June 28 at Nottingham. She left for London on Saturday.

“It’s a matter of great pride and honor for me to represent Pakistan and my priority would be to present a soft image of my beloved country at the Olympic Games and tell the world that Pakistanis are sports loving nation,” she said while addressing at the Media Talk, arranged in her honour by Sports Journalists Association of Sindh (SJAS) in collaboration with British Council in Karachi at the Nasra School, where she is student of matriculation.

President, SJAS Rashid Ali Siddiqui (Express), Secretary General Ubaid-ur-Rehman Awan (Samaa TV), managing committee members Muhammad Asghar (Metro TV), Imtiaz Ali Naranja (Daily Jasarat), Zubair Nazeer Khan (GNI news agency), Ali Hassan Naqvi (ARY TV) and Aamir Khan (News One TV), British Council representatives Nisha Isran and Arslan Rabbani, Principal Nasra School Nusrat Zaidi and sports coordinator Humera Siddiqui attended the function.

Zainab, 16, said, “The people of Pakistan are sports lovers and my duty will be to earn Pakistan a good name.” She has been selected from a total of 5,000 students. The London Olympics Torch Relay will be held in Nottingham on June 28, 2012 where 20 students from Azerbaijan, Brazil, Bangladesh, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Jordan, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mozambique, Nigeria, Pakistan, South Africa, Turkey, Tanzania, Trinidad & Tobago, Uganda, and Zambia will participate.

Zainab said that she was over the moon after getting selected for the torch rally at the London 2012 and was looking forward to represent her school, city, and country at the biggest event in sports. “I’m thankful to my teachers who have guided me to the glory”, said Zainab, who is also a netball player. She thanked the SJAS for holding a function in her honour to bring her in limelight.

On the occasion, President, Sports Journalists Association of Sindh, Rashid Ali Siddiqui said, “It’s great honour to our country that Zainab Imran is bringing glory to Pakistan as she would represent the country at the London Olympiad. “We are proud of this young girl as she is going to make it to Olympics prior to Pakistan hockey team, which made direct entry in extravaganza”, he added.

Secretary SJAS, Ubaid-ur-Rehman Awan, said that the SJAS will keep promoting the young athletes because such youngsters earn Pakistan laurels in the world. Nisha Israr from British Council, Principal Nasira School Nusrat Zaidi, and Sports Coordinator Humera Siddiqui also spoke.
