News Items: 3rd Asian Beach Games

In a glittering display of song and dance, the 3rd Asian Beach Games at Haiyang City, China, was officially declared opened by H.E. Mr. Ma Kai, State Councilor and Secretary General of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China at 9.00 pm on 16th June 2012. All 45 member NOCs of the Olympic Council of Asia are participating in the 3rd Asian Beach Games from 16th to 22nd June 2012, with around 1,550 athletes and about 550 team officials, competing in 13 sports. The Malaysian Contingent is participating in 5 sports, namely, Beach Volleyball, Beach Woodball, Powered Paragliding, Waterski and Windsurfing, with 24 athletes.

The Malaysian Beach Volleyball Team returned to Kuala Lumpur early this morning after 7 days participating in the 3rd Asian Beach Games in Haiyang. They won three matches, against Kyrgyzstan scoring 21-8; 21-8, against Palestine in rubber sets, 21-14; 18-21; 15-10 and against Sri Lanka scoring 21-17; 21-16. They qualified for the Quarter Finals but lost to Indonesia with a score of 21-15; 21-16.

From 9th to 16th June 2012, four (4) sports from Malaysia reported to the Athletes Village. They are Beach Volleyball, Windsurfing, Powered Paragliding and Beach Woodball.

This morning was the first day Windsurfers Katherine Ong, 17 years old from Penang, took part in the Bic Techno (Women’s Class) and went into 8th position out of 11th after three races of 6 kilometres per race. She has still 9 more races to improve herself. Another windsurfer, Mohamad Daniel, 16 years old from Langkawi took 9th position out of 12th on total participation in the Men’s Class. He too has 9 more races to go to improve his position.

The Beach Woodball arrived with a 14-member team and had their first training session to acclimatize themselves with the beach condition today. As for the Malaysian Powered Paragliding 6-member team, the athletes did very well today competing with about 8 countries among them are countries like Thailand, China, Indonesia and Korea.

There will be more competitions the next few days for the three sports mentioned and also Waterski members who would be arriving tomorrow led by two families. Aaliyah Yoong, the youngest participant would be interviewed by the media in the Athletes Village on the same day of her arrival.

MALAYSIAN CRICKET ASSOCIATION PLAYS HOSTS FOR TWO MAJOR

EVENTS IN JUNE (articles below contributed by the Malaysian Cricket Association)

INTERNATIONAL CRICKET COUNCIL (ICC) ANNUAL CONFERENCE

The ICC Annual Conference 2012 will be held at the Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur starting Monday, June 25 till Thursday, June 28, 2012. This is the first time an event of such a great importance to cricket is being held in Malaysia.

It is definitely a feather in the cap for the Malaysian Cricket Association to be entrusted with the task of organizing an international gathering of cricketers representing their respective countries and at the same time hosting the Under 19 Asia Cup 2012.There will be a total of 150 delegates from all over the World congregating in Kuala Lumpur to attend this global conference which also includes 350 local guests.

All affiliate and associate members of the ICC will be attending the annual conference to put forward issues pertaining to cricket activities in their regions. Beside all the items in the agenda, issues relating to development, finances and funding will be major topics at the Conference.

In conjunction with this event, the organizing committee has planned a series of captivating Malaysian experiences with the hope that the delegates will savour KL’s charm and take back with them wonderful memories of our country.

The Conference Gala Dinner is scheduled on Wednesday, 27th June 2012 in the presence of the current President of International Cricket Council, Mr. Sharad Pawar who also serves as the Agricultural Minister of India. We are hopeful that our Honourable Prime Minister, YAB Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak will grace the occasion.

Malaysian Cricket Association as host of both the ICC Annual Conference and the Under 19 Asia Cup are hopeful for a bigger cricket initiative in the development and popularity of the game amongst Malaysian.

ACC U/19 ASIA CUP 2012:

The Malaysian Cricket Association has been given the honour to organise the inaugural ACC U/19 Asia Cup Cricket Competition starting 23 June till 1st July 2012, In the 8 team competition which consists of the four test playing nations, India, Pakistan , Sri Lanka & Bangladesh.

Malaysia is in Group A with the other being India, Pakistan & Nepal. Group B consist of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan & Qatar. Teams will play a one round league followed by cross over semi-finals between the 2 top teams from each group and the winners meeting in the final on Sunday, 1st July at the Kinrara Oval. The other venues are Bayuemas Oval, Selangor Turf Club and Royal Selangor Club.

All teams are expected to check-in at the Seri Pacific Hotel, Kuala Lumpur on Thursday, 21st June 2012, which is the official tournament hotel for all teams and officials. The next day is allocated for practice sessions and meetings of the respective team managers and technical officials. Malaysia will be playing their first match against Pakistan, who is the 2010 ICC U/19 Cricket World Cup runners-up at the Bayuemas Oval, Klang.

For the Malaysian Under-19 players, it truly will be a great experience to pit their skills against the much stronger opponents. The national team under the guidance of former Sri Lankan test cricketer, Roy Luke Dias, who is now our Director of Coaching, is putting the pool of national under 19 probable through phases of training to pick the team. It may be an uphill battle for the young Malaysian players but that won’t dampen their spirits.

The final 15 players will be picked after a series of training and friendly matches to carry the Malaysian flag into this tournament. Cricket lovers and fans are all invited to come and give your support to our youngsters.

Olympic Day Fun Run 2012

The Olympic Day Fun Run 2012 will be held on Sunday, 8th July 2012 from 6.30 am, at Dataran Merdeka. Entry forms are available from FTAAA and OCM. Road shows are held at the following McDonald’s Outlets: June 16th and 17th at Sunway Pyramid and June 23rd and 24th at Jusco Bukit Raja, Klang. To date, over 5,000 participants have registered and the target of 12,000 runners will be achieved before the Closing Date of 24th June 2012. The Run has 13 categories, with cash prizes for the 1st to 5th finishers in each category and finishing medals for the minimum first 30 finishers, in the Men’s Senior and Women’s Senior categories. For other categories, there will be more finishing medals. The participation fees are still the lowest compared with most of the runs in Kuala Lumpur. Each registered participant will be entitled to a certificate of participation, Olympic Day Fun Run 2012 T-shirts and a McDonald’s “Be Our Guest” Card. Participation forms and details of the Run could be downloaded from www.olympic.org.my.

31st OCM Annual General Assembly 2012:

The 31st OCM Annual General Assembly (AGA) will be held on Saturday, 30th June 2012, at 9.30 am, at Sports Arena, Level 3, OCM Indoor Sports Complex, Kuala Lumpur. The 30th OCM Annual Report, the proposed amendments to OCM Constitution and the Annual Financial Report had been sent to the members. As the elections of OCM’s Office Bearers are held biennially, there will be no elections at the 31st OCM AGA 2012.
