Innsbruck 2012 launches the world’s first Virtual Youth Olympic Torch Relay

IYOGOC Press Release Nov 15, 2011: Two months ahead of the 1st Winter Youth Olympic Games in Innsbruck, Seefeld and Kühtai from 13 to 22 January 2012, Innsbruck 2012 launches the first Virtual Torch Relay in Youth Olympic history through its Facebook page. This is in addition to the Youth Olympic Torch Relay, which will start next month.

“The Virtual Youth Olympic Torch Relay gives people from all continents and cultures the chance to ‘be part of it’, to become a part of the 1st Winter Youth Olympic Games, to spread the Olympic Spirit across the globe and accompany the torch on its journey to Innsbruck,” explains Innsbruck 2012 CEO Peter Bayer.

The Virtual Torch Relay will end on 27 December – the very day that the Youth Olympic Torch Relay will commence its journey through Austria, returning to Innsbruck for the lighting of the Youth Olympic Flame in Innsbruck’s Bergisel stadium on 13 January. While in the Torch Relay the number of Torch Bearers is strictly limited to 2,012 runners, participation in the Virtual Torch Relay is open to everyone registered on Facebook.

The only thing Facebook users must do to become Virtual Torch Bearers is to like the Innsbruck 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games Facebook page (www.facebook.com/innsbruck2012) and follow the steps. The required minimum age for participants is 12 years (as per 9 November 2011).

All Virtual Torch Bearers will automatically take part in a draw to win prizes including the chance to be the first Torch Bearer of the actual Youth Olympic Torch Relay on 17 December in Athens, Greece. The star prize includes flights and accommodation. The winners will be drawn on 28 November, 19 December and 27 December 2011.

Show your support for the 1st Winter Youth Olympic Games and be part of the first ever Virtual Youth Olympic Torch Relay.
