IJF Press Release/Photos, Tamas Zahonyi and Gabiela Sabau: Nov 06, 2011: Yesterday was the last day of competition on the occasion of the Junior World Judo C’ship, Cape Town 2011. The Women’s -78 and +78 and the Men’s -100 and +100 were concerned. Please find below day 3 and 4 results (Junior World Judo Championship).
Women’s -78kg: Gold Medal for Japan
During the first final of the last day of competition in Cape Town, Asia was 100% represented with UMEKI, (JPN) and Hyunji YOON (KOR). After having scored a waza-ari, Yoon took a strong lead. But during a phase on ne-waza (floor), Umeki did a fast and precise action to catch her opponent with sankaku-jime followed with an immobilization, giving the 10th win to Japan.
In the category, none of last year medallists were in Cape Town to defend their medal. In the first semi-final, 18 year old Karen STEVENSON, from the Netherlands, winner of the European Cup U20 in Berlin, last August, was opposed to the Japanese Mami UMEKI. In the second half of the draw, the other Dutch competitor, Guusje STEENHUIS, second at the Continental Junior Championship in 2011, had to face Hyunji YOON, from Korea. The two bronze medals went to Guusje STEENHUIS (NED) and TILLMANNS, Julia (GER).

Men’s -100kg: Happy Story for Cuba
What a nice story for the Cuban Jose ARMENTEROS. Invited by the IJF to participate in the Junior World Judo Championship, his return flight ticket by mistake was booked two days ago. The IJF could change the schedule, and ARMENTEROS could take part and win the world title. In the final he defeated the Italian Domenico DI GUIDA with two waza-ari.
From last year Junior World Judo Championship, two medallists were trying at least to get the same result. Bronze medallist from Agadir, Feyyaz YAZICI couldn’t make it. After a first win against Philip AWITIALCARAZ (GBR), he lost against Gabor GEIER (AUT), who then was eliminated by the French, Clement DELVERT. In his semi-final, DELVERT was opposed to Domenico DI GUIDA (ITA), Junior European Champion this year.
Young-Hun KIM was more successful than YAZICI, after his silver medal from last year, as he could make it through the preliminaries to be opposed to Jose ARMENTEROS (CUB), the Cuban fighter, who eliminated the Japanese competitor in the quarter final. But it was the day of the Cuban and KIM was eliminated and couldn’t even step on the podium, finishing at the fifth place, the two bronze being attributed to Takumi ASANUMA (JPN) and Alikhan DZARMOTOV (RUS).

Women’s +78kg: A Last Second Victory
What a final in the women’s +78kg! Having scored a strong waza-ari with a hip movement (tsuri-goshi), the German Carolin WEISS was almost touching the gold medal, the precious medal was in her hands, that’s what she thought. But a judo fight finishes when the time is over and only one second is enough to score a ippon.
The Japanese did not forget that evidence and at the last second, she could catch Carolin WEISS with an immobilization that gave to the defending world champion the final victory and a second Junior world title. One more for Japan, which has been dominating the whole championship.
After the preliminaries, the defending World Champion from last year in Agadir, Manami INOUE (JPN) was still chasing for gold as she was opposed to the third Dutch athlete qualified into the final four of the competition, Tessie SAVELKOULS (NED), Junior national champion this year in her country. In the upper part of the draw, the German Carolin WEISS was opposed to the Korean Ara JO. The two bronze medals were attributed to Ara JO (KOR) and Tessie SAVELKOULS (NED).

Men’s +100kg: Final Victory for Japan
The Championship has begun with the national anthem of Japan. The last music to be played in Cape Town to conclude this year edition of the Junior World Judo Championship was… the national anthem of Japan. With the final victory of Takeshi OJITANI, Japan trusted most of the titles that were attributed in South Africa. In the remake of last year final, CHO, from Korea couldn’t change the history and was again beaten by OJITANI.
Thus, from last year Junior World Judo Championship in Agadir, two fighters were again present in Cape Town to defend their Junior World Ranking. After the preliminaries, defending champion Takeshi OJITANI (JPN) was opposed to Stepan SARKISYAN, from Russia. In the second half of the draw, bronze medallist from last year, Guham CHO (KOR), was also present in the semi-finals after the first rounds of the competition and he had to face the second Russian of the category Anton KRIVOBOKOV (RUS).

Women’s -63kg: Ota over the top!
From the beginning of the final, the match seemed to be a one-way ticket to the gold for the Japanese, who largely dominated her opponent Halima MOHAMED-SEGHIR (POL) and scored ippon one minute before the end, giving a eights gold medal to Japan.
The two semi finals opposed Kateryna LYALINA (UKR), bronze medallist at the continental Cadets in 2009, and Haruna OTA (JPN) in the upper part of the draw, and the 19 year-old Halima MOHAMED-SEGHIR (POL) and Katiejemima YEATSBROWN (GBR), winner of the continental cadet championship in 2011 in the second half of the draw.
From last year Junior World Championship in Agadir, the two bronze medallists were fighting in Cape Town, but none of them were able to reach the final block of the competition, Kathrin UNTERWURZACHER (AUT) being defeated during the first round by OTA (JPN) and Jialing ZHENG (CHN) being beaten by Milane KERCKHOVE (BEL) at the second round of the competition.
In the category, Clarisse AGBEGNENOU, from France, was the one to beat as she already obtained several very good results in the senior age category (gold medal on the occasion of the Judo Grand Prix, Abu Dhabi 2011), and until the quarter final, nobody seemed to be able to beat her, but the Japanese, who after two minute scored with a powerful technic, before immobilizing the French for ippon.
After the repackages, Agbegnenou, who came for the gold medal, could obtained a beautiful bronze medal, and drop some tears, Kateryna LYALINA (UKR) winning the second bronze. It must be noted the very good performance of the South African athlete, Esmarie PRETORIUS, who obtained a very good 7th place, in front of her public.

Men’s -81kg: Acrobatic Victory for MARUYAMA
Before the first minute in the final, the Japanese launched his first acrobatic left-handed uchi-mata, that the Russian Albert KOSTOEV could avoid. The match then continued on a very high rhythm, the Russian trying to score with his right handed sumi-gaeshi, event if just before the last 30 seconds, both fighters were penalized with a shido. The end of the fight was approaching, when Goki MARUYAMA tried a very last spectacular uchi-mata and scored the so awaited ippon synonym of the ninth victory for Japan.
In the category, the only medallist from last year world championship in Agadir still competing in 2011 was Krisztian TOTH, from Hungary, and once again he had a really good day of competition in Cape Town until the semi-final, going through the preliminaries by beating Baasandorj SELENGE (MGL), Robin REIBEDANZ (GER), Yacine LADOUR (ALG) and Khavambay KHOVDAL (KAZ). In the semi-final he was opposed to the 19 year-old athlete from Russia Albert KOSTOEV, bronze medallist at the European U20 Championships in 2011.
In the other semi-final, the finalist of the European U20 Championship 2011, Max MUENSTERBERG (GER) was opposed to the 19 year-old Japanese Goki MARUYAMA. The two bronze medals were attributed to Beka GVINIASHVILI (GEO) and Khavambay KHOVDAL (KAZ).

Women’s -70kg: First Gold for Austria
Naranjargal TSEND AYUSH (MGL) will probably be disappointed after her final against Bernadette GRAF (AUT). After a fantastic semi-final concluded with an outstanding ippon, she entered the tatami decided to win the title. But that was not the choice of the Austrian, who took advantage of a big mistake of the Mongolian and immobilized her on the edge of the tatami, giving the first Junior world title to Austria, here in Cape Town.
In the category, none of the medallist from last year Junior world Championship, Agadir 2010, were still present in Cape Town. Therefore, the draw table was totally open to new champions. The first semi-final opposed the very young Lisa SCHNEIDER (GER) only aged 17, winner of several medals at the european level in 2011, and the asian Junior Champion of this year, Naranjargal TSEND AYUSH (MGL).
But after the domination of Japan during the first two days of competition (7 gold medals), the surprise came from Gulnoza MATNIYAZOVA (UZB), who eliminated Kumiko YUKI (JPN), winner of this year European Cup U20 in Lyon. After her performance Gulnoza MATNIYAZOVA was also defeated and had to enter the repechages. The second semi-final of the day opposed the Austrian Senior National Champion, Bernadette GRAF, and Rong CHEN, from China. The two bronze medals were attributed to CHEN, Rong (CHN) and SCHNEIDER, Lisa (GER).

Men’s -90kg: Double World Champion for Russia
For the last final of the third day of competition, in Cape Town, the two Russian athletes were qualified after having cleaned the two half of the draw. Knowing one-another very well, the match seemed to be very tight, when suddenly Kazbek ZANKISHIEV launched an amazing and terrific shoulder movement, that sent into the air Khusen KHALMURZAEV, who landed on his back for ippon.
In the last category of the day, there was also no medallist from last year Junior World Championship still competing, all of them having now entered the seniors. For the second time during that third day of competition, the Japanese fighter was also defeated by the Junior European Champion, Khusen KHALMURZAEV (RUS), who entered the semi-finals against the National Junior Champion of the Netherlands, Michael KORREL.
In the second half of the draw, Russia placed a second fighter Kazbek ZANKISHIEV (RUS) in the final four, the fourth qualified athlete being Ben FLETCHER (GBR), Junior National Champion. The last two bronze medals of the day were attributed to FLETCHER, Ben (GBR) and RETYNSKYY, Stanislav (UKR).
